Sciopero Generale - 1969

General Strike 1969 - di Amelia Rosselli

Sciopero generale 1969
impavida nelle nostre impaurite case.

English Transaltion
General Strike 1969
lamps lit to burn and the howl
of a calm daring crowd
find you suddenly involved
in something serious: that is
taking a risk! May this seeming
childishness also kill off my
incapacity to care.

A God hidden within could have been enough
my egoism was not enough for me
it was not enough for these people
to taste the richness of revenge
so soon smothered. We had
to express what was best: give in
to a rhetoric that was a howl
ot protest against destruction
fearless in our fearful
houses. (I lost that vertical
love for a solitary god,
revolutionizing myself
in the people, removing
myself from heaven).

I think this poem represents how easy it is to be brought into a serious and dangerous situation when you tend to just follow the crowd.  I believe she is trying to tell us to avoid going with the flow and doing things just because others are.  Don't "revolutionize yourself" in the people only to "remove yourself from heaven".

Andiamo a Key Largo e leggere i giornali ogni mattina.

Sabato siamo andati a Montepulciano.

Mi molto piaciuto lavorare all'ambasciata. Noi abbiamo letto "The Prince" da Machiavelli.  Non mi piaciuto questo libro.

Scrivo in inglese per questa:

I really enjoyed the beginning of my first week in Siena and am getting along great with the people, both the Senese and the other students.  My host family is amazing and I will write more about them later but for now I leave you with some comments on Machiavelli's the Prince...

Machiavelli is pretentious.  However he does have some ideas that make sense.  These chapters in "the Prince" were about the qualities a prince should have both personally and regarding religion.  Machiavelli thinks that princes need to be feared in order to be respected and that they should pretend to follow god outwardly and but that they shouldn't follow faith internally.  Essentially speaking, to me, Machiavelli is saying that if you want to be successful as a Prince you have to be something you aren't, something worse, not only a liar, but a bad person.
While I understand that these qualities do indeed make a "successful" Prince, I do not think that they make a "good" one, nor do I believe this is a mentality we should take when striving for perfection.  I think when you're in a position of government you need to strive to be successful while being a good person...  you may not always be able to treat everyone well but you need to try.

Formaggio di Italia

Mozzarella di Bufala.  A specialty of the Campana region of South West Italia.  There is nothing in Italy that makes my taste buds as happy as this.  Having the opportunity to visit a water buffalo farm where the cheese is being produced literally 20 feet away from the pens of buffalo was an amazing experience.  For this I am forever grateful to my group's private driver, Raffaele Iaccarino.  He picked us up from our hotel in Sorrento and drove us down to Paestum.  He waited for us to tour the complex of temples and the museum, before he took us to our amazing lunch.  Raffaele got us a backstage tour of the mozzarella factory.  Sadly they had just finished making the cheese we were about to consume.

From the second I took a bite of the literally minutes fresh mozzarella I was hooked for life.  When I tried the SMOKED Mozzarella di Bufala I thought my tongue was going to fall off.  Couple this with the good wine, good friends, and our singing friend Raffaele, this makes the Paestum excursion one of my best memories from Italy.
